The other week I had the privilege to listen to Julie Meyers share the most delightful and informative story about her family finding their roots. All of this happened quite innocently through a school project with Flat Stanley. What Julie shared with us was inspirational! Honestly, the story was so compelling and delivered with such passion, we all went on the journey with her.

I won’t spoil the end, you have to get Julie to share. I will say that there are twists and turns through out, at the end of the presentation you can’t help but be inspired and as importantly believe in the goodness of people. Julie is an excellent presenter and storyteller.

Julie Meyers is a storyteller. Her story grabs you from the beginning and you feel as if you are on this journey with her, and with Flat Stanley! Her family’s story feels universal. It certainly felt like mine. Meyers carries you along with her through her family’s experiences in Germany, and through the eyes of her daughter, as well!

Let her carry you along, too. Her story will resonate, and you will leave with your heart opened a crack more. I did.

There are stories that stay with you long after the room has gone quiet. Julie’s story was one of them.

She stood before us and unfolded a journey that was equal parts heartbreak and wonder — the story of a family fractured by the Holocaust, of names that had nearly dissolved into silence, and of the remarkable, improbable way she went looking for them, or more accurately, the ways in which they found her.

Julie Meyers gave us not just a story, but a lesson in what it means to refuse forgetting. To send something small and fragile out into the world, trusting that the world will handle it with care. And to discover, over and over, that it does.

This was a presentation of  grace and courage, built on the kindness of strangers who chose, again and again, to say yes, and so did Julie. We are better for having heard this remarkable story. Thank you for sharing it with all of us. “We will not forget.”

It starts with a simple children’s book school assignment and takes the listener through a heartwrenching story of both lost and found family. The story spans the time period of the horrific tragedy of the holocaust to the modern day kindness of persistent German citizens who refused to let the history of Julie’s family disappear. How these German historians connected to Julie’s daughter and her family is truly miraculous.
